CHWP provides preventative dental care by applying fluoride varnish, which is a fluoride treatment that is painted on teeth to help prevent cavities and to help stop small cavities that have already started. Fluoride varnish is a liquid containing fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral. It is recommended for both children and adults who are at risk for cavities. At CHWP the application for fluoride varnish is done by the nurse or provider. It is safe for use in pregnant women and older adults, although it may temporarily make teeth look yellow. After application, it is advised to avoid eating, drinking, brushing or flossing for at least 4-6 hours. Fluoride varnish helps protect teeth from developing cavities for several months and is recommended to be applied every 3 to 6 months for adults. It is the only type of fluoride treatment the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends for children younger than 6-years-old. Fluoride varnish is safe and used by dentists and doctors all over the world. It can be used on babies from the time they have their first tooth. Only a very small amount of fluoride varnish is used.
